Breast Lifting (Mastopexy)

The breast may lose its form due to losing and gaining weight, exposure to hormonal changes during pregnancy, or aging. As a result, sagging occurs in the breasts. The growth or reduction can accompany to sagging in breast, in other words, a sagging breast may have normal size breast tissue, or may have more or less breast tissue. The breast, which is located below the place where it should be in the breast lift surgeries, is moved to its normal position by steepening. The purpose of this procedure is to obtain a normal size breast at the normal place.

 

If a patient who plans to have mastopexy have normal size of breast tissue, the excess skin is removed and breast is steepened. If the patient has a breast tissue that is less than normal, the breast implant is placed with mastopexy to obtain the appropriate volume. If the patient’s breast is larger than normal mastopexy is combined with breast reduction.

Mastopexy lasts around 3 hours and it is performed under general anesthesia. The patients should stay overnight at the hospital so that the effects of general anesthesia will last.

 

Can I have breast lift surgery during my menstrual period?

During the menstrual period, swelling causes unreliable breast size measurement. Also, pain threshold is very low during menstrual period. For this reason, it is recommended to have the surgery except this period.

 

Does a mastopexy reduce breast size?

During the surgery, excess skin and a small amount of breast tissues are removed. For this reason, breasts reduce in size after breast lift procedure.

Where are the scars on a breast lift?

The location of the scars vary upon the breast size, level of sagging and quality of breast skin. If only the nipples are repositioned, the scar will be in the shape of the letter “O”. If both the nipples are repositioned and the excess skin is removed, there will be scars on the nipples as well as a line from the nipples to the bra line. This type of a scar is in the shape of a lollipop or the letter “I”. If the breasts are very large, breast lift is combined with breast reduction surgery and the scar is in the shape of the letter “T”.

 

What kind of methods should be performed for patients with small and sagging breasts?

Breast lift surgery helps upper repositioning of the breasts and increase of breast size for these types of patients. In the meantime, silicone breast implants are placed in order to increase breast size. Thus, the patients will have enlarged breasts with enhanced look.

 

What type of implant is used in breast lift and breast implant surgeries?

Round silicone implants are preferred for these surgeries. This is because the breats implant is placed under the muscles. Muscle movements may move and turn the implant. However, when the breast implant has a round shape, this instance does not occur. Please also keep in mind that breast implant selection also depends on the patient’s needs and the doctor’s preference.

 

What happens in the post-surgery period?

After the surgery, drains are placed to prevent liquid accumulation. The drains are removed in 2-3 days after placement. The patients can take a shower 2 days after drain removal. Then, the patients can get back to daily life but they should abstain from heavy lifting and uplifting the arms. In the post-surgery period, the patients wear sports bras. In addition to that, the incision lines are enclosed with sterilized tapes so that the patients do not require wound dressing. The patients keep the sterilization tapes on the breasts for 3 weeks.

 

 

How long should I wear a sports bra after the surgery?

It is recommended to wear a sports bra for 6 weeks. Wearing a sports bra helps the breasts to reach their ultimate place with the effect of gravity. After 6 weeks, you may also wear different types of bras.

 

Are the surgical scars permanent?

Any surgical scars are permanent. There are methods for fading away and making the scars least noticeable. Silicone creams and silicone dressings are the most frequently used methods. It is recommended to use silicone creams and dressings for at least 3-6 months.

 

How long after the surgery can patients get back to normal daily life?

The patients can get back to daily life within 7-10 days after the surgery.

 

How long after the surgery can I workout?

After 2 weeks, you can exercise without working out the arms. If you would like to add arm exercises, you should wait for 4-6 weeks.

 

If I get pregnant after the surgery, does my breast shape change?

Pregnancy causes hormonal effects on the breasts. For this reason, the breasts increase in size. After pregnancy, breast size change is unpredictable. The breasts can keep the same size as they were in pregnancy. They can also keep the same size before pregnancy period or they can even get smaller. These changes apply for the patients who had breast lift surgeries.

 

Can I breastfeed after breast lift surgery?

The breasts should have average size for breastfeeding. It is not a correct assumption that large breasts are most suitable for breastfeeding. It is also an incorrect assumption that small breasts cannot give sufficient milk. After breast lift, the patients can breastfeed in case breast tissues are sufficient and nipples are correctly repositioned. Otherwise, you may be incapable of breastfeeding or you may breastfeed in very small amounts.

 

Is it possible to have a second breast lift?

A second breast lift can certainly be done. The most important part is that the nipples should be repositioned without disturbing blood circulation. The second surgery is more difficult but it can get easier if the doctor is informed how your blood supply to your nipple was designed.
